Business Improvement Districts

London Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are business-led partnerships that aim to improve an area’s commercial activity. BIDs:

  • Promote economic wellbeing and economic growth
  • Attract inward investment
  • Give competitive regional advantage
  • Produce social wellbeing and improve quality of life
  • Develop partnerships between the private and public sectors
  • Encourage corporate social responsibility
  • Provide sustainable investment for ongoing capital projects/services
  • Create a positive sense of place and enhanced feeling of safety and wellbeing, as well as community pride.

You can work with one of the partner central London BIDs to help take up the Smart Green Business services in the most appropriate manner for your particular case. BIDs will work with you to select the most appropriate Smart Green Business services and activities for you to engage in according to your needs and interests.

As well as having excellent relationships with businesses in their area, BIDs have a strong environmental ethos and experience of improving environmental performance. The six BIDs are:

Angel BID Ltd was established in April 2007 - after local businesses voted overwhelmingly to establish a business improvement district to make their trading environment at the Angel cleaner, safer and brighter. We are an independent business-led limited company delivering services until 2012 to benefit almost 750 businesses in the BID area. With a strong commercial voice we represent their
views and best interests. Angel BID Ltd works in close partnership with the public bodies responsible for the Angel, such as Islington Council, Islington Borough Police and Transport for London. All the initiatives and projects we deliver are ADDITIONAL to the services they already provide. As well as marketing and promoting the Angel to a wider audience, we are primarily about getting to know our local businesses - finding out what they need and how we can help in making it happen.

C: Katie Lindsay
T: 020 762 012 01

Waterloo Quarter BID is a ‘cross-borough’ Business Improvement District (BID) operating in the area to the south and east of Waterloo station. Waterloo Quarter works to create a safer and more pleasant trading environment for businesses; to make Waterloo a destination for people to spend time and money and to promote and maintain the area’s individuality and unique character, whilst capitalising on new funding and development opportunities. It was originally established in Lambeth in April 2006, following a successful ballot of local businesses. In February 2008, businesses across the borough boundary in Southwark voted in favour of establishing an extension to the BID to enable Waterloo Quarter to operate across the natural commercial area of Waterloo, becoming the first ‘cross borough BID’ in London. The BID extension went live in April 2008.
